Here are some tips for maintaining your granite countertops:
Because marble is made of mostly calcium carbonate, it is susceptible to staining & etching. Marble’s porosity necessitates a few small initiatives that you will need to take to keep your marble beautiful. First and foremost, sealing your marble with a good impregnating sealer is key. An impregnating sealer that contains Fluorocarbon Aliphatic Resin clogs your marble’s pores and helps to delay staining. You may want to apply 2 or 3 coats of sealer every 3 to 6 months, depending on how much you cook and the products you use to clean your marble. To preserve your sealers effectiveness, clean your marble tops with a mild, low PH, anti-bacterial dish soap. Never use alkaline, abrasive or acidic cleaners with lemon, orange, or grapefruit extract, and or vinegar. You should know that anything acidic WILL etch your countertop. Etch marks look like dull, unpolished spots. Citrus fruits, tomatoes, & vinegar are the biggest culprits. Never leave fruits and vegetables on your marble tops. In order to avoid unsightly and unwanted staining and etching, use cutting boards and wipe up spills and splatters right away. Do not store carafes, bottles of oil, lotions, perfumes, nail products, or hair products directly on your marble, as oils can leach into the stone and stain it. Keep those items on a tray, in a basket, or in cabinets away from the marble.
